Why Lawyers Stopped Posting Courtroom Reels: The New Bar Council Rules Explained

By Delhi Law Advocates | Simple Legal Literacy & Court Practice Guides

If you browse Instagram or YouTube, you may have noticed that dramatic “Day in Court” reels, lawyer lifestyle vlogs, and videos shot inside court corridors have sharply declined.

This change is the result of regulatory guidelines issued by the Bar Council of India (BCI) regarding digital conduct and legal ethics.

At Delhi Law Advocates, we believe that understanding how the legal profession is regulated helps the public identify credible, authentic legal information. We represent clients across the Supreme Court of India, the Delhi High Court, and all District Courts (including Dwarka, Saket, Rohini, Patiala House, and Tis Hazari). Here is a simple guide explaining what the new BCI rules mean.

The Core Rule: Why Can’t Lawyers Advertise in India?

Under the Advocates Act, 1961, the practice of law in India is considered a noble profession focused on justice, not a commercial trade. Because of this, direct commercial advertising, paid solicitation, and exaggerated self-promotion are prohibited.

Key restrictions highlighted in the BCI guidelines:

  1. No Filming Inside Court Premises: Recording videos, reels, or photos inside courtrooms, judicial corridors, or chambers is strictly barred.
  1. No Robes or Bands for Social Media Branding: Advocates cannot wear official court robes, bands, or gowns in online promotional or entertainment videos.
  1. No Misleading Advertisements: Staged client testimonials, dramatic skits, or promises of guaranteed case results are not permitted.
  1. Pure Legal Education is Allowed: Explaining laws, public rights, and court rulings in an objective manner remains fully permitted and encouraged.

What This Means for the Public

These regulations ensure that the public receives accurate, responsible, and educational legal information rather than sensationalized social media content. When researching legal matters online, look for objective explainers that cite actual statutes and official procedures.
