This change is the result of regulatory guidelines issued by the Bar Council of India (BCI) regarding digital conduct and legal ethics.

The Core Rule: Why Can’t Lawyers Advertise in India?
Under the Advocates Act, 1961, the practice of law in India is considered a noble profession focused on justice, not a commercial trade. Because of this, direct commercial advertising, paid solicitation, and exaggerated self-promotion are prohibited.
Key restrictions highlighted in the BCI guidelines:
- No Filming Inside Court Premises: Recording videos, reels, or photos inside courtrooms, judicial corridors, or chambers is strictly barred.
- No Robes or Bands for Social Media Branding: Advocates cannot wear official court robes, bands, or gowns in online promotional or entertainment videos.
- No Misleading Advertisements: Staged client testimonials, dramatic skits, or promises of guaranteed case results are not permitted.
- Pure Legal Education is Allowed: Explaining laws, public rights, and court rulings in an objective manner remains fully permitted and encouraged.
